A Classic Charity Weekend 21st 22nd April

The Whangaroa Big Gamefish Club will be playing host to the W.S. Laurie & Co. Classic Boats Competition. This competition is different to all the rest throughout the year because the money raised from the contest goes to the Whangaroa Health Services. Boats 40 years and older will be competing for trophies and prizes in game-fishing and line-fishing sections.

It is interesting and lots of fun to see these old boats still fishing the seas, and talk to their skippers and crew about their histories. Some boats last year were over 100 years old and you can see details of last year's competition on the club web-site at:  Whangaroa Big Gamefish Club

We hope to compliment the classic boats with a display of vintage cars, and have the 4-piece band ‘Momentum' from Auckland playing a variety of music from past eras.

The competition is sponsored by W.S. Laurie & Co. (2002) Ltd. of Westhaven in Auckland who supply a gamefish trophy for the heaviest gamefish of the competition, and lots of fantastic prizes. In the gamefish section you can fish for marlin, shark and yellowfin tuna where the club rules apply, and in the line-fishing section there are prizes for yellowtail kingfish, snapper, kahawai and ‘other' species, where IGFA and MFish rules apply. In this section you can win the beautiful wooden North Harbour Foundry Trophy for the heaviest gamefish. Both sections have their own jackpot lucky boat draw and are heaps of fun with many ideas to raise funds for the Whangaroa Health Service who would like to refurbish their mobile clinic.

This clinic travels around the area in places like Totara North, Matauri Bay and Taupo Bay, bringing a valuable mobile medical service to the area. The clinic travels around every week with all the resident doctors at Whangaroa being rostered into the service, who can deal promptly with some matters, or provide referral to specialist services back at the Whangaroa base in Kaeo. This enables the widespread community of the area to have greater access to the help that they may need.

The Whangaroa Health Service, the club and W.S. Laurie & Co. would be pleased to entertain and thrill you, so come and join in the fun for a classic weekend.
