Over Labour Weekend the Whangaroa
Big Gamefish Club held a fishing contest generously sponsored by McCoy &
Thomas Sports Kerikeri. The Hunting & Fishing stockist provided a range of
rods and reels, fishing tackle and clothing from their store for the prizes in
adult and junior sections. The weather forecast was not good for the holiday
weekend with a forecast of 25 knot SW
winds and 1m swells but 26 anglers in 10 land-based and boated teams took part
to compete for prizes for the heaviest snapper, terakihi, yellowtail kingfish
and hapuka or bass. There was also a great prize of a Life-Lite Flounder kit
for the angler with the heaviest ‘other' game-fish.
The tallies for the weekend were
not large because of the weather which was slightly worse on the second days
fishing, and towards the end of the first days fishing boat teams were more
worried about the bush fire raging through Marble
Bay towards several houses. Two
tope of good size were caught, along with 8 snapper and 5 terakihi. The snapper
were caught in a variety of locations which included the Cavalli
Islands, Cone Rock, Taheke and
Ruahine Reefs, with Bill's winning fish caught on a soft bait in the Cavallis
from the boat ‘Big Red'. We certainly are seeing the snapper being weighed in
which have been caught on soft baits. The terakihi were mainly being caught off
Berghan's Point. Not many of the prizes were won, but some were given away as
lucky draws and the winners in brief were:
